  4.     Will the film business be ruled only by foreign moguls and
  5. domestic megastudios? Not if Robert De Niro can help it. The
  6. reclusive, renegade actor is betting his money and his
  7. reputation that he can deliver a convincing performance as a
  8. real-life film producer. De Niro's previous experience as a
  9. boss has been confined to playing characters ranging from Don
  10. Corleone in The Godfather, Part II to a film mogul in The Last
  11. Tycoon. But this year the 46-year-old Manhattan native became
  12. president of his own movie company, New York City's TriBeCa
  13. Productions, which already has ten film projects in early
  14. stages of development. In September, De Niro will open the
  15. TriBeCa Film Center, an eight-story converted coffee factory
  16. near the Hudson River that will house his production company and
  17. offer space to other independent filmmakers.

  19.     De Niro decided to go into business so that he could try his
  20. hand at directing and producing. "I never had the full
  21. responsibility for a film before and never wanted it. But now I
  22. do," he told a reporter. "Ultimately, it's to have control."

  24.     For his headquarters, De Niro chose an 83-year-old red brick
  25. building situated in TriBeCa, a trendy downtown neighborhood
  26. where he lives. De Niro, who will have 50% ownership in the
  27. building, is supervising a renovation that will leave in place
  28. industrial details like the giant coffee scales in his office.
  29. But the building's advanced features will include a 70-seat
  30. screening room designed by director George Lucas' production
  31. company.

  33.     The atmosphere at TriBeCa will be a far cry from that of the
  34. big studios. "We're more relaxed," says Jane Rosenthal, a CBS
  35. and Walt Disney veteran hired by De Niro as his executive vice
  36. president. "My two dogs come to work with me." There will also
  37. be some indulgences at the film center. One will be the TriBeCa
  38. Bar and Grill, a restaurant that De Niro is opening with
  39. financial investments from such pals as Sean Penn, Bill Murray
  40. and Mikhail Baryshnikov. De Niro's new Hollywood-on-the-Hudson
  41. may be an upstart, but it will not suffer for lack of
  42. connections.
